Altering the idea of a traditional sampler and executing a broader stroke with it, Deborah Baker takes a pop art approach to this historical folk art. Using warm oatmeal linen and black cotton thread, her pictographs are simple and fun. Formally they are rebus', a visual puzzle where words are represented by combinations of pictures and letters. Baker creates clever phrases of amorous intent and otherwise, along with full alphabets through a mixture of letters and symbols.
