Margie Criner

Welcome to February! A few updates and perhaps I'll see you this weekend. If that won't work please come to the closing reception on Saturday, February 22 for Margie's artist talk at 4pm. More details below.

Margie Criner and I will be watching Bert Green Fine Art this Saturday from noon to 5 pm. There are only three more weekends so we'd love to see you. Margie occupies the Project Room for this outing. The gallery is on the sixth floor of the Willoughby Tower at 8 S. Michigan Avenue at Madison. Right next to the Chicago Athletic Association, which is where you can go have a drink or lunch after our visit. I miss watching a gallery space still, and I'd love to introduce you to this stellar artist. Below are descriptive notes on her show.

Margie Criner makes intimate sculptures which contain miniature dioramas, viewable through a small window on one or more sides of the work. Her intention is to stimulate curiosity and discovery — opening up new worlds to anyone who is willing to look. At once charming, disarming, challenging and provocative, these sculptures make one work a little harder at looking, in an effort to make engagement with the artwork more satisfying.

Bert Green is at the LA Art Show this week, and Matt Bodett and Megan Sterling have the front room space. Notes on their show are below. They'll be watching the space on Friday in case you want to go on your lunch hour or later that day.

Megan Sterling and Matt Bodett both establish meaning via mental and emotional expressions which are based in their personal experiences with personal traumas, mental illness, depression, and anxiety. That Which Holds Us looks at the boat as a metaphor for life as being dependent now and then on the presence of a container — a thing that holds us. The container can preserve life as well as take it away. Both artists use a variety of media centered around their core practices of printmaking and drawing.

A note about my auction house job...

I'm on the hunt again for great consignments for Toomey & Co Auctioneers. I have about 2 months to get some solid things in for our upcoming Art and Design auction on June 7th. I know many of you will want to consign with us, and I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Or perhaps you know of someone who might like to consign. We have a great team of specialists encompassing expertise in all facets of Art, Modern Design, and Arts and Crafts. If I don't know the answer to a question, someone here will! We are looking for the best material possible, and we hold more than our own against any other auction house. We have two auctions coming up over the next two months. An Art & Design auction on Sunday, March 8, and an Interiors auction on Wednesday, April 22. I'll release more details about each auction as we get closer.
