Opening at Packer Schopf Gallery July 8th

Reception Friday, July 8th 5 - 8 PM

Hank Feeley Mary Porterfield Jenn Wilson

Hi Everyone and Happy Summer!

I have Friday night July 8th all planned out for you. First, you hit the Cultural Center at 5 or 6 PM to see Michael Dinges' exhibition. He's been working on a scrimshawed boat for the last two years....which will be hanging from the ceiling! After you are done at the Cultural Center... You'll head up to our gallery and see our last official show of the season. More on that show follows....

Hank Feeley     Mixed Bag      new paintings

This still is my favorite quote about Hank... "If Hank Feeley were not so strikingly original, I would say that he stands at the intersection of Magritte and Marvel Comics, but as it is, he has his own way of disorienting the viewer so we can see again, now with our perception refreshed." That's a quote from Billy Collins... Feeley takes license to reorder and re-contextualize the world of images to present not the accepted logical arrangement, but rather an aesthetically provocative re-arrangement. Feeley's sources are endless: signs and symbols of contemporary culture, art history and literature, myth and legend, and even doodles.

Mary Porterfield     Myths and Messengers     recent paintings

Painting allows Porterfield to bring organization to situations she perceives as overwhelming. She often reference acts of nature to represent situations that are out of control, both literally and figuratively. Her Catholic upbringing, symbolized through overpowering landscapes, has been a particular influence on her work. Sweeping vistas, geysers and volcanic eruptions are comprised of religious paradigms and saints, who completed seemingly heroic acts by giving unconditionally. Multi-figured narratives and metaphors depict her struggle to balance these ideals with the need to nurture oneself. Through the dichotomous nature of the work, her intention is to create a metaphysical discussion regarding the struggle to live a compassionate life.

Jenn Wilson      A Land Unbeknownst      new paintings

Wilson’s works, at their most elemental, are manifestations of her reactions to new environments and the idea of the unknown. The responses, as portrayed in her artistic endeavors, are catalyzed by fundamental images, realized in depictions of minutely detailed flora and fauna set against fantastical landscapes. Exploring Late Gothic, and Northern Renaissance, Wilson is drawn by their attention to detail and peculiar compositional construction. The images appear as paradoxical dystopian paradises Edens that have an irrational and chaotic order. The ultimate result is a coalescence of representational styles, historical narrative, and imaginative references which creates something unique and yet universal.
