As we anticipate Toomey & Co.'s first Folk, Outsider & Self-Taught Art auction on August 12, Aron Packer, Senior Specialist of Contemporary & Outsider Art, has prepared a New and Noteworthy article for our website in which he poses a question that he often gets asked: "What Is Outsider Art?" Along with offering definitions of Folk Art, Outsider Art, and Self-Taught Art, and how they overlap, Aron traces the history of unconventional art practice by those outside of the mainstream over the last century. In the process, Aron discusses some key developments, such as the release of Jean Dubuffet's 1947 manifesto on art brut, the publication of Roger Cardinal's influential book Outsider Art in 1972, and various important contemporary exhibitions and art fairs.
